Harvest - October 2008

2008 at La Verrière in a nutshell: Unfortunate weather all summer but saved by the September sun... The results: not the cornucopia of 2007 but nothing to sneer at
Everyone feared the worst, A pretty tough year in the region, hail, mildew, all that rain we had not had in years... Overall, OK but no cigar.Fortunately, we were spared the worst: Because of our chilly, high altitude exposure, our soil wasn't soppy and our late harvest allowed us to capture the two weeks of much needed sunshine in late September.Net-net, small harvest but good grapes. We love to exchange views with wine makers who know their stuff and it was a big treat to have Doug join us this year for the harvest. Santa Barbara Negociant and winemaker extraordinaire- his UberSyrah is nectar to the Gods and swims in a sea of Parker points (www.margerumwines.com).Hands on and to the point, he was uber-helpful in the winery-- we really enjoyed his company and his advice.
